# How to Install a Ceiling Fan: Complete DIY Guide

Installing a ceiling fan is a great way to improve comfort and reduce energy costs. Whether you're replacing an existing light fixture or installing where a fan already exists, this guide will walk you through the process safely.

## Before You Start

### Critical Safety Check: The Electrical Box

This is the most important step! Ceiling fans are heavy and vibrate during operation. They MUST be mounted to a fan-rated electrical box.

  • Look for "Fan Rated" or "Suitable for Fan Support" stamped on the box
  • If replacing a light fixture, the existing box is likely NOT fan-rated
  • Fan-rated boxes are either attached to a ceiling joist or use an expandable brace

### Fan Sizing Guide

- Small rooms (up to 75 sq ft): 29-36" blade span

- Medium rooms (76-144 sq ft): 36-42" blade span

- Large rooms (144-225 sq ft): 44-50" blade span

- Great rooms (225+ sq ft): 50-54" blade span or multiple fans

## Step-by-Step Installation

### 1. Turn Off Power

- Turn off the circuit breaker for the room

- Use a voltage tester to verify power is OFF at the ceiling box

- Never rely on just the wall switch!

### 2. Remove Existing Fixture

- Remove the light fixture or old fan

- Disconnect the wires (note which is which)

- Remove the old mounting bracket

### 3. Install Fan-Rated Box (if needed)

If the existing box isn't fan-rated:

- Use an old-work fan brace that expands between joists

- Insert through the existing hole

- Expand and secure to joists

- Attach the fan-rated box

### 4. Assemble the Fan

Follow manufacturer instructions to:

- Attach the mounting bracket to the motor

- Connect the downrod (if applicable)

- Wire connections inside the canopy

### 5. Mount the Bracket

- Attach the mounting bracket to the electrical box

- Use the screws provided with the fan

- Ensure it's secure and level

### 6. Wire the Fan

Standard wiring:

- Black (hot) to black fan wires

- White (neutral) to white fan wires

- Green/bare (ground) to green fan wire

- Blue wire (if present) is for a separate light kit

If you have a separate switch for the light:

- Connect the red wire to the blue fan wire

### 7. Attach the Fan Motor

- Hang the motor on the mounting bracket

- Tuck wires into the canopy

- Secure the canopy to the bracket

### 8. Install Blades and Light Kit

- Attach blade brackets to the motor

- Secure blades to brackets

- Install the light kit (if applicable)

- Add light bulbs

### 9. Test the Installation

- Restore power at the breaker

- Test all speeds and the light

- Listen for wobbling or noise

- Use the balancing kit if needed

Step-by-Step Plan

  1. Turn Off Power at Breaker

Turn off the circuit breaker. Use a voltage tester to verify power is completely OFF at the ceiling box.

  2. Remove Existing Fixture

Remove the old light or fan, disconnect wires, and remove the old mounting bracket.

  3. Verify or Install Fan-Rated Box

Check for fan-rated box. If not present, install an expandable fan brace between ceiling joists.

  4. Assemble the Fan

Following manufacturer instructions, attach mounting bracket to motor and connect downrod if applicable.

  5. Mount the Bracket

Secure the mounting bracket to the electrical box using provided screws. Ensure it's level.

  6. Wire the Fan

Connect black to black, white to white, ground to ground. Blue wire connects to separate light switch if available.

  7. Attach Fan Motor

Hang motor on bracket, tuck wires into canopy, and secure canopy to bracket.

  8. Install Blades and Light Kit

Attach blade brackets to motor, secure blades, install light kit and bulbs.

  9. Test Installation

Restore power, test all speeds and light, listen for wobbling, use balancing kit if needed.
