# How to Replace a Light Switch (Single-Pole and 3-Way)

Replacing a light switch is one of the simplest electrical upgrades you can do. Whether your switch is worn out, you want a new style, or you're upgrading to a smart switch, this guide covers single-pole and 3-way switches.

## Understanding Switch Types

### Single-Pole Switch

- Controls a light from ONE location

- Has two brass terminals + ground

- Most common type in homes

### 3-Way Switch

- Controls a light from TWO locations (like stairs or hallways)

- Has three terminals: one common (dark) + two travelers (brass)

- Works in pairs—you need two 3-way switches

## Replacing a Single-Pole Switch

### 1. Turn Off the Power

- Find the correct breaker and turn it OFF

- Use a voltage tester at the switch to confirm no power

- Test both with the switch ON and OFF

### 2. Remove the Cover Plate

- Unscrew and remove the cover plate

- Set aside the screws

### 3. Remove the Old Switch

- Unscrew the switch from the electrical box

- Gently pull it out, keeping wires attached

- Take a photo of the wiring for reference

### 4. Identify the Wires

For a single-pole switch:

- Hot wire (black): Brings power in

- Load wire (black): Goes to the light

- Ground wire (green or bare copper)

Note: Both black wires connect to the brass terminals—the order doesn't matter for single-pole switches.

### 5. Disconnect the Old Switch

- Loosen the terminal screws

- Remove the wires

- If wires are backstabbed, insert a small screwdriver into the release slot

### 6. Connect the New Switch

- Connect ground wire to the green screw first

- Connect black wires to brass terminal screws

- Wrap wire clockwise around screws for best contact

- Tighten screws firmly

### 7. Install the Switch

- Carefully fold wires back into the box

- Screw the switch into the box

- Ensure switch is straight (toggle up = ON)

- Attach the cover plate

### 8. Test Your Work

- Turn the breaker back on

- Test the switch in both positions

- If it doesn't work, turn off power and check connections

## Replacing a 3-Way Switch

The process is similar, but wire identification is critical:

  1. Identify the common terminal (usually darker colored or labeled "COM")
  2. Tag the wire on the common terminal before disconnecting
  3. The common wire goes to the common terminal on the new switch
  4. The two traveler wires go to the remaining brass terminals (order doesn't matter)
  5. Connect the ground wire

Pro tip: Work on only ONE switch at a time when replacing 3-way switches.

Step-by-Step Plan

  1. Turn Off Power at Breaker

Find the correct breaker and turn it OFF. Use voltage tester to confirm no power at the switch.

  2. Remove Cover Plate

Unscrew and remove the cover plate. Set aside the screws.

  3. Remove Old Switch

Unscrew switch from box, gently pull out keeping wires attached, take a photo for reference.

  4. Identify the Wires

Identify hot wire (black), load wire (black), and ground (green/bare). For 3-way, note the common terminal wire.

  5. Disconnect Old Switch

Loosen terminal screws and remove wires. For backstabbed wires, use small screwdriver in release slot.

  6. Connect New Switch

Connect ground first, then black wires to brass terminals. Wrap wire clockwise, tighten firmly.

  7. Install the Switch

Fold wires into box, screw in switch (toggle up = ON), attach cover plate.

  8. Test Your Work

Turn breaker on, test switch in both positions. If it fails, turn off power and check connections.
