How Do I Snake a Drain Myself?

Answer
A drain snake (also called a drain auger) is the most effective tool for clearing stubborn clogs that plunging won't fix. A basic hand-crank model costs $20–30 and handles most household clogs.
When to use a snake vs. a plunger
Use a plunger first — it's faster and simpler. If 15–20 full plunging strokes don't improve drainage, reach for the snake. Snakes are better than plungers for clogs that are deeper in the line, and better for solid objects (kids' toys, accumulated grease) vs. soft clogs.
Equipment
- Hand-crank drum auger (25 ft cable) for sinks and tubs — $20–30
- Toilet auger (closet auger) for toilets — $15–25 — never use a standard snake in a toilet, it scratches the porcelain
- Wear rubber gloves and old clothes — this gets messy
Snaking a sink
Remove the P-trap (optional but makes it easier). Insert the snake cable into the drain or directly into the pipe after removing the trap. Push the cable while cranking the handle clockwise. When you feel resistance, maintain forward pressure and keep cranking — the snake is either breaking through or hooking the clog. Pull back slowly, bringing the clog material with it.
Snaking a toilet
Use a toilet auger specifically. Insert the rubber sleeve into the toilet bowl (this protects the porcelain). Crank the cable into the drain. When you feel resistance, crank to hook or break the clog. Extract. Flush to confirm flow is restored.
Snaking a bathtub
Remove the drain cover and the overflow cover (the plate on the tub wall near the faucet). The snake goes through the overflow plate opening — this gives better access to the drain line than going through the drain strainer.
After snaking
Run hot water for 2–3 minutes to flush any remaining debris. If the drain is still slow after two attempts with the snake, the clog may be further downstream (in the branch line or main sewer) and a longer power auger or professional hydro-jetting may be needed.
